Welcome back and Happy Fall from the College & Career Center!
We will be having a busy fall with many college/university recruiters traveling again and visiting local high schools. Thus far we have had visits from UNR and USC! Stanford will also be visiting in late September. Additionally, both the US Army and US Marines are also visiting weekly at lunch. Please listen to the announcements and/or check out the College & Career Center calendar page on our main website for college visits. The WACAC College Fair at the Reno Tahoe Convention Center is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, November 5th. More information to come on how to register and attend. Fall break is a great time to research colleges, scholarship opportunities or arrange campus visits and tours!
UNR: The UNR application is now open, and we will be hosting our first of many application workshops on 9/27 during lunch in the College & Career Center. Please note that our UNR admissions rep is visiting all senior English classes at Galena (English 7/8 and AP Literature) in September as well! The Nevada Bound is currently accepting registrations for their Fall dates. Check it out at: https://admissions.unr.edu/portal/nevadabound. It is a great way to get to know the campus and the opportunities they have to offer!
GOING TO COLLEGE OUT OF STATE? Applications are open, so start applying and meet those priority deadlines! Meeting those deadlines are highly encouraged. You will receive your acceptance letters first, financial aid packages, it helps with merit scholarships they offer, and much more. Make sure you are talking with admission counselors and representatives to understand deadlines, housing requirements and necessary documents needed for admissions. ALL SCHOOLS ARE DIFFERENT! So please do your research or come see me. I am happy to help you in this process!
UC/CSU: The UC application is now open (please keep checking the CSU website for their application to open!). Deadline to apply for both systems is typically November 30th.
COMMUNITY COLLEGES: The Nevada Promise Scholarship is now open and accepting applications! If you are interested in attending a community college in Nevada, this is an amazing scholarship opportunity! If you fulfill all the requirements by their scheduled deadlines, you could be eligible for up to three years tuition and mandatory registration fees waived. This is not a financial need or merit scholarship, you just need to be a Nevada resident, graduating senior, meet all the program deadlines and enroll in 12 semester credit hours each semester. You must declare your associate’s degree program when applying. If you do not know what you want to study, please select Associates of Arts or Science. Do not select undeclared, or you will not be eligible. You can always switch programs later. The deadline to apply is October 31st. Remember, your application for the Nevada Promise Scholarship is separate from your application to your community college of choice. You must apply to both! Also, our TMCC admissions rep is also visiting all senior English classes at Galena (English 7/8 and AP Literature) in September as well!
FAFSA UPDATES: If you are a senior (or parent of a senior!) and wish to apply for financial aid for college (community colleges and 4-year colleges, as well many technical/vocational colleges), you will need to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA has been revamped and will not be available until (hopefully) December 2023. WCSD is hosting several FAFSA Nights at each of the high schools in January and February 2024 to assist students and parents with this application process! Please check the College & Career Center website for those dates and for more detailed information on the financial aid process!
Seniors/Senior Parents: If you would like to receive the College & Career Center monthly newsletter, please visit the College and Career website. There is a QR code where you can register to receive the newsletter. Information regarding financial aid, scholarships, upcoming events, career exploration tools, college search resources, and much more are posted on our College & Career Center website. As a parent, you can access all this information on the College and Career website anytime!
