Happy October from the College & Career Center!
By now, most seniors should have applied or are finishing up their applications to colleges and/or trade schools (or other programs) for Fall 2024! Remember- it is always best practice to submit applications early and well before published deadlines. Not sure what your student should be doing at this time? Check out the Planning Calendars on the College & Career Center website (organized by grade level). We have some upcoming college recruiter visits in early November (along with the WCSD College Fair) so please see below and check the calendar on the College & Career Center website for updates!
The College Fair at the Reno Tahoe Convention Center is scheduled for Sunday, November 5th (12 p.m.-4 p.m.) Please register in advance: https://app.strivescan.com/registration. Fall is a great time to research colleges, scholarship opportunities or arrange campus visits and tours! Students can always reach out to recruiters regarding questions about their schools and/or attend their individual webinars by visiting their websites. Please be watching those deadlines!
Seniors: you should be collecting your letters of recommendations and copies of your transcripts to submit for applications for scholarships! Please keep checking the scholarships section of the website for updates/information as needed. Also, do not forget to check with the financial aid offices at the colleges you are applying to (both in state AND out of state) for information on scholarship opportunities they have as well. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to receive any additional merit-based scholarships! For UNR: February 1st is the admission deadline for scholarship consideration!
Need a transcript?
All transcripts must be ordered through: https://washoeschoolsnv.scriborder.com The school is not allowed to give unofficial OR official transcripts to students. You must order through this website, and your first (4) transcripts are free. You have the option of mailing a sealed transcript or having an electronic version emailed to you (or the destination of your choice). Please remember to allow for processing and plan accordingly!
Already been accepted to your college of choice? Congratulations! Make sure you review your student account with the school. Many will be requesting your shot records, opening their in-house scholarships, asking for applications to be filled out for housing, and requesting transcripts. If you are in the Jump Start Program taking college classes and/or have passed AP tests with a score of 3, 4, or 5, remember to submit your AP test scores, as well as your transcripts from TMCC or other community colleges you have attended. Schools will need this information to waive classes and give you college credits (if applicable)!
UNR: The UNR application is open, and we continue to host UNR workshops during lunch in the College & Career Center. If you haven’t considered participating in Nevada Bound, check it out at: https://admissions.unr.edu/portal/nevadabound. It is a great way to get to know the campus and the opportunities they have to offer!
GOING TO COLLEGE OUT OF STATE? Applications are open, so start applying and meet those priority deadlines! Meeting those deadlines is highly encouraged because you will receive your acceptance letters first, financial aid packages, it helps with merit scholarships they offer, and much more. Make sure you are talking with admission counselors and representatives to understand deadlines, housing requirements and necessary documents needed for admissions. ALL SCHOOLS ARE DIFFERENT! So please do your research or come see me. I am happy to help you in this process!
UC/CSU: These applications are OPEN. The deadline to apply for both systems is typically November 30th.
COMMUNITY COLLEGES: The Nevada Promise Scholarship is open and accepting applications! If you are interested in attending a community college in Nevada, this is an amazing scholarship opportunity! If you fulfill all the requirements by their scheduled deadlines, you could be eligible for up to three years tuition and mandatory registration fees waived. This is not a financial need or merit scholarship, you just need to be a Nevada resident, graduating senior, meet all the program deadlines and enroll in 12 semester credit hours each semester. You must declare your associate’s degree program when applying. If you do not know what you want to study, please select Associates of Arts or Science. Do not select undeclared, or you will not be eligible. You can always switch programs later. The deadline to apply is October 31st. THIS IS A HARD DEADLINE. Remember, your application for the Nevada Promise Scholarship is separate from your application to your community college of choice. You must apply to both!
FAFSA UPDATES: If you are a senior (or parent of a senior!) and wish to apply for financial aid for college (community colleges and 4-year colleges, as well many technical/vocational colleges), you MUST complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA has been revamped and will not be available until December 2023. WCSD is hosting several FAFSA Nights at each of the high schools in January and February 2024 to assist students and parents with this application process! Please check the College & Career Center website for those dates and for more detailed information on the financial aid process!
Information regarding financial aid, scholarships, upcoming events, career exploration tools, college search resources, and much more are posted on our College & Career Center website. As a parent, you can access all this information on the College & Career website anytime!
